On the eve of election day

I'll never forget how I felt the night before the election four years ago. I was convinced that America would elect John Kerry and, in doing so, admit we made a mistake with George W. Bush. I wrote in my journal something like "We're sorry that Bush squandered the enormous good will sent our way by the rest of the world. We know he screwed up on a global scale. But we would never make that mistake twice."
Well, we all know how 2004 turned out. To add insult to injury, W. was re-elected on my Mom's birthday.
But tomorrow is another day, and this time hope will win out over ignorance and fear. It's too bad that Obama's grandmother didn't live to see it. The woman who practically raised our next president died yesterday in Hawaii.

Racial shooting incident on Halloween
My black cat, Pepe, was shot in the head last night while he was making his regular evening prowls in his quiet Midtown neighborhood. The seven-year-old staggered home with the bullet from the pellet gun lodged above his eye. He'll survive, I hope, but he was not a happy cat.
Why would anyone let a black cat wander the mean streets of Midtown Tucson on Halloween night? The short answer is that I'm a bad pet owner. The longer answer is that I never really believed all those fraidy-cats who told me that black cats have a tendency to meet with foul play on this particular night. Pepe has always gone in and out at will, and I saw no reason to deny him the pleasures of the prowl. Well, now I know, and the two of us are cooking up a special trick for the unknown punk who popped a cap in his head.

OK, so I like frogs.
I used to collect them by the bucketful after the summer rains when I was a kid.

Why? Why not?
Today is the first day of the rest of my blog, and time will tell whether I let it live or die. My main motivation at the moment is to have a place online where I can post pictures of my new dog, Kane. Now, I just have to figure out how to do it.
